The 32 papers in this collection (all but one previously unpublished) discuss attitudes to the English language, its varieties, and its usages. Many of the papers report on and evaluate attitudes to English in three countries--chiefly the U.S.A.--where English is predominantly the mother-tongue. One set of papers provides a historical perspective by reviewing the state of English and attitudes towards it in earlier periods. Another set provides a contemporary perspective by examining attitudes of non-native speakers. The final section of the book offers a variety of views on the current situation and on implications for the teaching of English at different levels.
